A Safe Shelter for Solo Travellers in Udaipur, Rajasthan

I am an avid solo traveller and, for me, safety is always a priority. As a solo traveller, I’m always entirely on my responsibility. The trip is not only about fun but also about learning to take better care of myself hundreds of miles away from my family.

Quite some time back I had gone to Rajasthan and made my way to the city of lakes called Udaipur. Nature is in its happiest form here standing smilingly in the desert region of Rajasthan, India.

As a female solo traveller, it was my top concern regarding the hotel I could call “my home” during the period of my stay there.

I was quite confused browsing through all the star-rated properties on popular hotel booking portals. Apparently, all seemed nice and with tariff rates skyrocketing the properties look better and more inviting. I wanted to stay in a low price guest house near Gangaur Ghat in Udaipur.

But let’s be honest! When you are travelling solo some consideration for the budget becomes important to focus on, isn’t it? For me, the budget plays a deciding factor in picking up properties for my stay. At the same time, compromising on the safety aspect by narrowing down the accommodation choices to cheap ones will be a costly mistake by guarantee.

Battling through the dilemma of choices, the Universe was kind enough to pop up Bhanwar Vilas at Gangaur Ghat in Udaipur amongst my search results. Quite moderately priced, the property seemed okay and the location felt excellent. I booked it on the go (uff, not an app just saying on the go!). I booked this guest house near City Palace in Udaipur through Goibibo. Same-day booking was done and I paid the amount on that day only.

Once I reached Udaipur I told the auto-rickshaw gentleman to take me to the Gangaur Ghat. It’s in old Udaipur. After reaching there I had to look for the property for a while. The entrance was neither quite impressive nor easily identifiable. And, it was raining!

The moment I stepped inside this guest house near City Palace in Udaipur my impression improved. I was greeted by a very well-behaved elderly gentleman ( very old but quite a personality) who made me feel as if I had come to my grandparent’s house with his affectionate attitude. He was very loving and extremely assuring that being a solo female traveller I need not worry even a bit regarding my safety and convenience at his property. He said that if I wanted he could also talk to my parents and let them know that I am safe at his home. Wow!

It is an old house but very well maintained. Also, it seems many of its portions are recently renovated so modern-day conveniences should not be a compromising factor here.

Yes, I had already booked this heritage home near Gangaur Ghat, Udaipur in advance so check-in took no time. I had booked for a non-AC room but he was generous enough to let me check in an AC double bedroom. And, I was honest enough to never switch on the AC as I had paid only for a non-AC room, so a pat on my back in appreciation!

Safe & Cosy

The room was medium-sized, soberly decorated and had a nostalgic Rajasthani style of interior and it was clean. No ghastly dark spot or disgusting marks my detective eyes could discover anywhere across its length and breadth. I was happy. The bathroom was spacious, well-lit and nice!

I was happier to realise that it is an absolutely safe abode for me, for the next few days that I am in Udaipur. Our instincts are more intelligent than our brain can ever depict. The vibe that I could sense all through my body in that property was that of safety, comfort and bliss. And the vibes were not wrong and my instincts didn’t fool me. My stay there was really very comfortable and, most importantly, absolutely safe.

On my floor, there was only one room and it was mine. I could access the rooftop any time I liked. Never was a single episode of feeling heebie-jeebies during my stay there.

His Tour Suggestions Helped Me Save Money

I was guided by Uncle ji (Dadaji is what he is popularly known as there) regarding where to go; how to go and where to eat for what kind of food I prefer. He was good enough to warn me not to yield to the unjustified price demands of any auto rickshaw drivers there as it would have cost me unreasonably more to go to places where I could do it on my own at ease.

His Restaurant Suggestion Was Excellent

Uncle ji had also suggested to me (when I asked him where to find good non-veg food) to go to the restaurant, the Harigarh Restaurant at the Ambrai Ghat (tourist attraction) near the Gangaur Ghat. The food was delicious there with an amazing view of the Pichola Lake. Arrays of both veg and non-veg items with different types of bread, rice and dessert items.

The property is Very Close to Udaipur Attractions

In brief, his suggestions were really good. The property is located just a few steps away from the Gangaur Ghat and Bhagore Ki Haveli. The famous Jagdish temple is only a 2-minute walk or even less if your steps are long. City Palace is within 5 minutes from that place. So booking a room in that property means you can save transportation costs to all days popular Udaipur tourist places.

Economic Choice for Travellers

The tariff rate for the room I stayed in cost me less than 1000 INR per night. Quite a good deal it was for a female solo traveller like me.

In this guest house, you will not get any food. You have to eat outside and that was okay for me. They ensure cleanliness all through the property around the clock and they will provide you with clean drinking water without any extra cost. Some homestays charge money for providing water also. But, not here the case is.

Catching Morning Flight was Hassle-free

While coming back home I had my flight scheduled for around 8:00 a.m. Maharana Pratap Singh Airport from Gangaur Ghat takes around 40 to 45 minutes. I had to leave the property by 6:30 in the morning. It was again uncle ji who arranged for the rickshaw driver the previous night one’s when I told him about my flight. The rickshaw driver was really a dependable middle-aged man. His behaviour was good and he comfortably dropped me at the airport, much before the time.

During my Udaipur stay I never had to panic even for a moment regarding my safety and my comfort. A significant portion of the credit goes to uncle ji of Bhanwar Villa! He is generous, well-behaved, affectionate and acts like a loving guardian.
